CPR News: CA Law Requires CPR Training in Schools

September 2016, California Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 1719 which requires cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to be taught in schools. This new law, authored by Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona), makes California the 35th state to provide CPR training in high schools!

High schools that require a course in health education for graduation will begin to offer instruction in performing CPR in the 2018-2019 school year. Students can be taught the fundamental life-saving skill of hands-only CPR.

This is a big step toward giving young people the confidence it takes to perform proper CPR if ever a life threatening situation presents itself.

Here's Skeleton Lake, one of the Mammoth Lakes in California. We hiked 3.5 miles to get here and it was well worth the view of snow capped mountains, pine trees, lake and sky.

You caught us horsin’ around! These cool colts had a great idea to take a break while their owners were hiking and I decided to join them. It was a great choice on such a hot day!

This trailhead sign really caught my eye. Not only does it point us in the right direction, but it makes for a great photo op!

Thanks so much for joining me today on the blog! Comment below to let me know what you thought.

"HEY! I just want to say THANK YOU for always being willing to come to yucca valley every other year to teach our CPR classes... and THANK YOU for making sure we hear about seizures, burns etc..... this morning... one of my littles had a seizure.... one helper stayed with him, I called 911 and my daughter called the little ones mother.... the 911 operator, the paramedic, and the Dr. all commented on how calm, collected, and informative we were about times, duration.... etc. Other than "through the roof" adrenaline rushes... we kept our heads and got through the moment.... THANK YOU for great training!!!!" - Shannon Acosta

Why People Choose Learn CPR 4 Life to Get Certified

We caught up with some of our amazing CPR Instructor Trainers and Students to ask them why they choose Learn CPR 4 Life. Check out what they had to say!

"Greg came out last week to train a group of us at my work on Blood borne Pathogens, CPR and First Aid.  I've been trained in First Aid/CPR for the past 15 years but I can honestly say this is the first time I feel confident if I ever had to administer CPR on someone after taking the class with Greg.  He speaks to us like we're having a normal conversation, not like he's reading out of a text book.  He answered all of our questions thoroughly and provided great training in all three areas!!  Greg's sense of humor was great, time flew by and I definitely look forward to renewing my certs in a couple of years knowing the material is up-to-date and we won't have to watch those re-enactments from the 80's."

- Vanessa B. Murrieta, CA

What did you think of our Learn CPR 4 Life Training Courses?

"Awesome!!! I did the online learning and the in-person skills validation and I loved it! I needed my card by a Monday and I had called and made the appointment on a Thursday. The skills validation was on a Saturday, which was so convenient for me! It was a good price, definitely affordable! The instructor is super nice too! She lets you practice on the manikin for a little bit, do a run-through so she can watch your mistakes, and when you're ready, she lets you test officially! The test was only 30 minutes or so and she had my card right there! Awesome class! Would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs their CPR card or like me, need their BLS ASAP!" - Suzy H. Victorville, CA

"This CPR class was great! instead of everyone taking turns practicing on the models (like previous classes I've taken before) everyone had their own model to work on. Given that we had a larger group, I felt as though the instructors made sure to give each individual their attention in a timely manner. The instructors also made sure everyone was learning the proper CPR technique. I highly recommend this class for anyone looking to be CPR certified!" - M.J. Montclair, CA

"This was most definitely, The Best CPR class I have ever attended. They made the whole class feel comfortable. I really enjoyed it, and will recommend this class to everyone."
- Veronica S. Barstow, CA

"I have taken CPR classes with Learn CPR 4 Life since 2005. I would never go anywhere else. Greg and Mary are awesome and Greg is funny!😉 Which makes the classes fun and their experiences that they share are interesting. I hope they stay around for many years to come." - Lori S. Hesperia, CA

Instructor Training: Why People Choose Learn CPR 4 Life

Are you looking to start your own business? Learn CPR 4 Life has the solution for you. Become a certified CPR Training Instructor, be your own boss and teach your own classes.

What is the benefit? Take the amazing Lisa F. for example. Lisa was stuck at a boring day job. The pay was fine and the job title was nice, but there was no real room for growth, and of course the hours were not flexible. So, after doing a little research, she made the leap of faith to start her own business as a CPR Instructor.

"It was after much thought and prayer that I decided to switch career paths. When I knew I wanted to become a CPR Instructor, I didn't want to get certified through just any company. I wanted it to be someone I trusted, someone with a lot of experience, and someone who I know would help me leverage my own business by their credibility. That's why I decided on Learn CPR 4 Life. After reading their Yelp reviews and other CPR testimonials, I felt at ease knowing that other people had a great experience with them as well." - Lisa F.

Now, Lisa is starting her own CPR business and looking forward to all the benefits it has to offer.

February is Heart Health Month: Learn How to Prevent Disease

February is Heart Health month and we're teaming up with other organizations to raise awareness about heart disease and prevention. In an effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks in the US by 2017, we're encouraging people to know their blood pressure and give tips to help them lower and maintain it if it's too high.

High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease, yet there are often no signs or symptoms to indicate when it's too high. That's why it's so important to schedule routine check ups and be aware of your blood pressure level.

How to Prevent Heart Disease

In order to prevent heart disease, we recommend taking a proactive approach with your health.

  • Schedule a routine checkup with your doctor
Scheduling a routine appointment with your doctor is a great first step to learning your blood pressure. If you discover that your blood pressure is too high, don't panic! Your doctor will work with you to lower it and provide proper medication and help along the way.

  • If you take blood pressure medicine, be consistent
Just like any other medication, it's important to take the prescribed dose as directed. To ensure you stay consistent, set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take your medicine at the same time each day.

  • Alter your diet
If you're like the rest of America, you probably love salt. But your blood pressure unfortunately doesn't. Consider reducing your sodium intake, which will in turn reduce your blood pressure. That means opting for fresh meats rather than packaged. (Some cold cut packaged turkey breast can run up to 1,050 mg of sodium for 3 slices!) Avoid high sodium meat products by doing a little bit of extra research while shopping. Many brands are committed to providing products with much less sodium, so be sure to check your food labels. Also, choosing fresh fruits and veggies over frozen is another surefire way to keep your sodium intake low.

  • Are you a smoker?
Smoking sucks - quite literally. Stop inhaling this dangerous drug and if you haven't started smoking, don't start! If you need help quitting smoking, talk to your doctor or check out articles online. Here's a great how to quit smoking source to get started.

Thanks for joining us today on our blog. For more useful information about heart health, check out what we're talking about on our Facebook page, or check out our CPR website.
